Sutton Common - Doncaster

2002 dig - Section One

At the time of our visit, this section had been most excavated, revealing an outer wall and other wall like features, along with several post alignments and the outer ditch.

The outer wall of the main enclosure was stone built and with footings of this size (1m wide) could have stood as high as three metres.

Behind the wall, a post hole was revealed

A further worked stone within the section.

"The larger enclosure at Sutton Common comprises of (at least) two distinct phases. The earlier of the two phases is characterized by a palisade which surrounds the site, and part of the excavated palisade can be seen on this photo taken in 1999. All timbers are of oak and have a 'pencil-point' which was driven into the sands and clays. We estimate that a total of 3600 oak posts were used to form the palisade of the larger enclosure." The outer ditch in section one proved to be only 1-2m deep.
